Landscape Gardening

In the 1970’s we were taught any type of landscape could be used for any project. Now we give more thought to enhancing the eco-system you already have. Just by observing the plant communities in the natural environment we can build your unique landscape.

For example, is your site dry and rocky or shady and moist? Is the terrain steep and difficult? With the shallow soils of Muskoka any plants that have established themselves should be viewed as assets to your property.

We begin your site visit observing what existing plants grow where and why. Specifically the anchor native trees, large shrubs and smaller “understorey” woody shrubs and herbaceous plants. Northway Gardeners utilizes what you already have.

“Old fashioned” plants such as lilacs, shrub roses, hydrangea, junipers and yew all still have a place in the Muskoka landscape.

Robert Allen and his staff from Northway Gardeners have worked for us at our cottage for the last 16 years. We have done extensive landscaping and planting during this time, principally using materials indigenous to Muskoka. In my view, Robert is a highly creative landscape professional whose sensitivity to and “feel” for Muskoka’s natural beauty is exceptional.

Your filter bed doesn’t need to be covered with grass, combinations of low growing perennials and ground covers will do the trick and are more interesting.
Northway Gardeners are a ‘must know of’ in Muskoka; The owners, Susan and Robert Allen are extremely knowledgeable, reliable and prompt and their professional landscapers are a wonderfully delightful, exact and hardworking team!
